Pigeons and Heights

Pigeons were constantly at his window on the 5th floor. We would meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to talk about life, music — and learn English, of course. We saw the pigeons come from “who knows where” and nest in the balcony that overlooked the city of Guadalajara.

In 1993, there were just a few tall buildings, so we could see the clear blue sky and the dance of white clouds every morning with the smell of freshly ground coffee while we dug into our English lessons.

Dentists were not among my top list of students. But Dr. Enrique de la Torre’s wife had contacted me through the principal at my son’s kindergarden. My first bilingual-to-be dentist in Guadalajara was interested in acquiring the communication skills he needed to attend seminars and conferences in his field. Our first lesson took place on January 4th, 1993 at 9 am.

My family and I had arrived to Guadalajara just a few months earlier from the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, where I had left most of my teaching practice behind in pursuit of a promising job opportunity that was offered to my then spouse. As it turned out, the municipalities of Guadalajara and Zapopan in the state of Jalisco became “my” land of opportunities.

Not only did another prominent dentist from the same pigeon-building become bilingual that same year, but a line of referrals sprung from those morning lessons. Seven years later, Palm Learning opened its doors to many other professionals who wished to take their English to the next level, and embraced our Personalised Conversational Methodology in our one-to-one sessions.

Thank you Dr. Enrique Pérez de la Torre and Luis Miguel de la Isla Gálvez for adventuring into the learning path we co-created, and the subsequent referrals that have made it possible for Palm Learning to grow like the city’s skyscrapers and nest learning experiences in many more bilingual professionals.
